In the making of disturbed by the emergence of voices I abandoned a considerable number of even more naive sound experiments to my hard drive, thinking I might do something with them later.
Armed with subsequent field recordings from Amsterdam and den Haag, I had one last amateurish attempt at making something approaching listenable, before abandoning them altogether.
These efforts are the only survivors of that process
[Although most likely still unlistenable, they too have been abandoned ... to their fate]

inspiration
On the 3rd of September 1650 Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarian Army defeated the Scottish Army at the Battle of Dunbar. The surviving Scots became prisoners of war and were marched south to Durham where they were imprisoned in the cathedral.

In November 2013, excavations for a new café in the Palace Green Library, next to the passageway known locally as the Windy Gap, revealed two mass burials. Durham University archaeologists subsequently confirmed that the bones were those of some of the imprisoned survivors.

On 3 September 2018, purely by coincidence, I attended the “Bodies of Evidence” exhibition in the Palace Green Library. Even though a Durham resident, prior to 2013 I had been unaware of the imprisonment in the Cathedral.

The exhibition also documented the even more extraordinary story of the subsequent fortunes of many of the Dunbar survivors.

Intended to be be listened to at moderate volume, preferably at dusk or in the dark

In memory of the Scottish soldiers captured at the Battle of Dunbar and imprisoned in Durham Cathedral, who died in captivity and whose bones lay buried beneath the Windy Gap.
